When you walk through the produce section of your local grocery store, chances are you notice that there are quite a few products that are marked as 'organic.' You have probably spotted several other items throughout the rest of the grocery store that are also labeled as being 'organic.' If you are like most consumers, you are probably wondering if they are worth the extra cost-because most of these organic products are quite a bit more costly than their non-organic counterparts.


Well, there is no one definitive answer to that question. See, some organic products are worth the extra cost, and some aren't so essential. So, here is a guideline on how to know which ones to purchase for your family and which organic products are not so necessary.

First of all, think about the item. If it is food, it is more crucial. This is because many non-organic foods have been treated with pesticides and chemicals to preserve their freshness. No, the non-organic products are probably not harmful for you-especially if you and your family have been eating them for years. But, the organic products will likely be healthier for you.

Now that we are just thinking about foods, think about specific types of foods. Unprocessed foods are the ones you should definitely think about purchasing in organic versions. This is because processed foods (such as boxed macaroni and cheese mix or potato chips) are generally unhealthy anyway, so eating them as organic products will not really benefit your health.

So, now we are pretty much down to unprocessed foods. This means fruits, vegetables, and meats, for the most part. Organic products for these foods are your best choices. But, it would be unreasonable to expect the average person to be able to afford to purchase all of these items as organics. After all, that would be quite costly. So, let's narrow down the list some more.

Fruits and vegetables with thick skins that are peeled before being eaten are ones for which you can buy the non-organic versions. Examples would include bananas, oranges, and avocados. Also, consider buying red meat as a non-organic product. This is because consumers aren't supposed to have much red meat in their diet, so having that as a non-organic won't really matter.

Yes, organic products can be quite expensive. But, if consumers are choosy about which items they purchase in organic versions, they can still buy some of them.
